Since its inception, the Clery Act has empowered students, employees, and their families to make informed decisions about their safety by requiring institutions to disclose accurate and timely information about crime on and around campus. The crimes required for annual reporting have not remained static; they have expanded and evolved over the past 35 years in response to emerging threats and the needs of the campus community. Hate crimes, for example, were added in 1998 and further refined in subsequent amendments in 2008 and 2013, reflecting a growing recognition of the need to protect marginalized communities. Additionally, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 brought critical attention to dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking, integrating these serious crimes into Clery reporting to address the unique challenges they present on college campuses.

As campus safety concerns continue to evolve, the Clery Act is adapting further as we see hazing now included in the list of required crime statistics with the passing of the Stop Campus Hazing Act. Participants will leave this session with a deeper understanding of the current list of Clery crimes, how these requirements have shifted over time, and what future changes lie ahead. This webinar is ideal for campus safety professionals, administrators, and those tasked with compliance, offering a comprehensive look at the past, present, and future of Clery Act crime reporting.
